CSI Assignment 5-1

When CSI first hit the scene in October 2000 viewers couldn’t get enough. I know that when I saw that first episode I couldn't wait until the following week so that I could see the next episode. Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) is a series based out of Las Vegas, where criminologist use physical evidence to solve grisly murders (Wikipedia the Free Encyclopedia , 2010). The series is very graphic and full of drama it will have you wanting more.

Ever since the first episode the series has been heavily criticized by police, actual real life forensic scientist, and district attorneys, saying that the series portrays an inaccurate image of how crimes are solved (Wikipedia the Free Encyclopedia , 2010). The Parents’ Television Council also thinks that the level and gratuitousness of graphic violence, images, and sexual content seen on the series are too much for TV (Wikipedia the Free Encyclopedia , 2010). But despite all the criticism the series has been very successful and is still up and running this very day. In May 2002 a spin-off CSI Miami aired and then again in 2004 with CSI NY; both containing the same gruesome graphics and drama as the original CSI (Wikipedia the Free Encyclopedia , 2010). Personally I like the goriness, and the drama of the series it is what keeps America interested. I think that if it wasn’t so gruesome and full of drama people wouldn’t watch it, it would be just like all the other series out there based on crime.

Twiter

Within the last year or so Twitter has taken the world by storm. The ability to connect with people all over the world in the simplest form is amazing. The result of using Twitter to stay connected with friends, relatives, and coworkers gives you a sense of what folks are up to (Twitter). It gives you the ability to choose if you want to respond to any of the updates that you receive. This means you can step in and out of the flow of information as it suits you and it never queues up with increasing demand of your attention (Twitter). Additionally, users are very much in control of whose updates they receive, when they receive them, and on what device (Twitter). For example, twitter provide settings where you can automatically turn off Twitter at dinnertime and you can switch off Twitter updates at any point

The first Twitter prototype was built in March 2006 and launched publically in August 2006 (Twitter). The service grew popular very quickly and it soon made sense for Twitter to move outside of Obvious. In May 2007, Twitter Incorporated was founded (Twitter). Twitter is a great tool to find out what your friends and many celebrities are doing every minute of the day. Yeah it may sound a little obsessive and border line stalking but believe it or not millions of people follow each other everyday. Personally I don’t want people knowing my every move but I guess some people enjoy being followed through the airwaves.

Simply put, Twitter is what you make of it. You can receive a lot of information about your friends, or just a tiny bit. You can be followed or you can be the follower, it’s up to you.

Reality TV

Reality TV has taken the television world by storm; it has become a fixture of our everyday lives. Whether its Celebrity Fit Club or The Bad Girls Club, they seem to have a show for everyone’s television interest. If you were to ask 100 TV critics: Is reality TV bad for society, more than half would say "yes (Wanke, 2009)." In fact, some media critics and child advocacy groups have gone as far as to describe reality television as "Gutter TV" and "Humiliation TV (Wanke, 2009)." In addition, it seems as though each week brings a new study detailing the negative impact reality TV has on society. Critics believe that reality TV mirrors what our society has become—a community of materialistic morons who don’t blink twice about running around naked while swallowing live cockroaches if it means winning a cool million for doing so (Wanke, 2009).
While it may come as a surprise to some, there are some who believe that reality TV is good for society. In fact, a group of esteemed writers from TIME magazine once declared that reality TV shows were “the best thing to happen to television in several years (Wanke, 2009).” They and others, who embrace the genre, maintain that reality TV has brought excitement back to the airwaves (Wanke, 2009). I personally think that it depends on that show; while some shown portray men and women in a whorish manner others portray men and women as survivors and strong willed individuals.
I think that reality TV will one day disappear but I don’t think k that it is going to be any time soon. Right now that is the only ways we have to see inside the celebrity world.

My Three Icons (Assignment 2-2)

The icons that I chose for this assignment are The Statue of Liberty, Judge Mathis, and Heels. These three icons range from liberty, freedom, overcoming obstacles, confidence, and, sex.

The Statue of Liberty was chosen because of what it represents past and future. She represents the struggles amongst the people across the world both black and white(Richmond, 1999) . Her appearance to me means freedom and justice for all.

Judge Mathis is a great example of overcoming obstacles and turning your life around for the better. He was born and raised in one of the roughest and poverty stricken cities in the U.S., Detroit Michigan(Williams, 2010). He spent most of his younger years in and out of prison and committing numerous crimes(Williams, 2010). Just like many of our youth today. He eventually got his life together before it was to late and made a good name for himself along with a successful career. Judge Mathis is a clear case that regardless of the bad hand that you are dealt in life and the poor decisions that you made, it is never too late to turn it around and do something positive.

Heels, what can I say they exude confidence and sexiness(Brain, 2008). There isn't a women in the world that can say that when she puts on a cute pair of heels, that her confidence level doesn't go up a couple notches, and that she feels sexy. I don't know what it is but they are the most painful and beautiful feeling creations in the world. Whether the heel is 1inch or 6 inches they just make us feel good. I just want to know why they have to hurt so bad, it there a such thing as a comfortable pair of heels? I guess what they say is true, Pain is Beauty ladies!

The Cell Phone (Assignment 2-1)

I can remember back when I was younger when cellphones didn't exist. Now when I look around they are everywhere. Everyone young and old are walking around talking and texting on this new found mobile technology. Now don't get me wrong I love having the access and the convenience of my phone. But what did we use for mobile communication when they didn't exist?

Today many people, including myself, treat their cell phone as if it were a life line. If we were to mistakenly leave it at home we are consumed for the rest of the day with the what ifs until we are able to get to it. Some of even drive home on our lunch break just to get it. How did we get so dependent on this device that cost us so much money and frustration? Now that we have been spoiled by technology with the cell phone, if they were to be taken away tomorrow what would we do ?

UGG Boots( Assignment 1-4)

The story of the UGG boots began in Australia back in 1978, when a young sufer took a trip to California with a bag full of sheepskin boots. Althug it took almost two decades for the boots to finally get some recognition, they quickly became the must have footwear for all ages.

The style, warmth , and comfort that these boots provide in unexplainable. Although that come with a $200 price tag it hasn't seemed to matter to a mass majority of people. Many companies have tried to duplicate the sleek style and comfort that the UGG boot provides, but they havent come close. But are they really worth the price?
